How should companies think about the decision to bring on advisors?

When is this the right decision and how specifically should you define expectations and deliverables?

Everyone knows most advisors are bullshit, but that doesn’t make bringing on advisors a bad idea. In fact, I bring on advisors liberally with the understanding that A) I can always fire them (and I have), B) some will be more useful than others, and C) the scope should be ultra-clear up-front. We have had technical advisors to help my technical co-founders scale, recruiting advisors who up-level our entire recruiting process, and executive coaches who I compensate with equity. Personally, I think equity is a tool to align incentives between you and people you want to help you. It also allows you to work with people you’d have no chance of hiring.
